To give an overview of my capabilities I have arranged my set of skills in 5 competencies:
1. Design
2. Management & Organization
3. Engineering
4. Research
5. Social skills & Communication
1. Design
I’m a designer of interactive solutions. I have a creative spirit, am able to communicate my ideas visually and can lead design processes.
Creative Spirit
The largest requirement for design is an open mind to discover new possibilities. Out-of-the-box is a place where I feel comfortable, but I always keep both feet on the ground. I am a creative problem solver with no fear to get my hands dirty.
Visual Communication
To communicate my ideas, concepts and scenarios on a professional level, I am able to work with the following software:
- Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign
- Computer Aided Sketching: Painter (with Wacom)
- CAD: SolidWorks, Rhinoceros and Unigraphics
- Movies: Premiere, AfterEffects, Flash
Design Process
I’m experienced with leading my own design process and adapting the process to fresh inputs throughout the process. My ability to critically reflect on what I am doing and my flexible approach enables me to get more out of projects and myself.
2. Management & Organization
During my study I have organized several large events such as the Industrial Design exhibition during the Dutch Design Week twice and have been chairman of study association Lucid, an association that organizes symposia, lectures, study trips, etc. My management skills will require further development on a business level, but my current track record gives me confidence that I’ll manage.
3. Engineering
Physical Prototyping
I am experienced in creating physical models with complex constructions made with different materials and manufacturing techniques. I have created many models with rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printing, vacuum casting and laser cutting.
Virtual Prototyping
- Programming languages: JAVA, C(++), ActionScript and Lingo
- Programming software: Eclipse, Processing, Flash, Director, MAX MSP
- Electrical engineering: Arduino, Phidgets, use of sensors and actuators.
4. Research
In every project I have started with user/consumer research and a literature review. During the whole process I evaluate my ideas/concepts/designs with those users. I am both comfortable with qualitative as quantitative research methods, although I prefer qualitative methods to give rich input in the design process.
5. Social skills & Communication
I am a very social person and that’s why I do well in teams, both as a team player and team leader. I am a confident leader with the ability to build an enthusiastic team with an open and social atmosphere, which in the end gets the most out of people. I always try to set an example for my team, by working hard and achieve my goals. Furthermore I am able to lead team and client meetings, give convincing presentations and document my work on an academic level.
